Two ECE Professors Win Google Research Award worth $67k

ECE Professors Stratis Ioannidis and Miriam Leeser have won a Google Faculty Research Award. Their proposal, titled “Privacy-Preserving Data Mining over FPGAs in the Datacenter,” will receive more than $67k from Google to deploy and evaluate secure function evaluation algorithms over field-programmable gate arrays. Their research would enable companies that operate large data centers, like Google, to perform data mining operations efficiently while offering strong privacy guarantees.

Google Faculty Research Awards are one-year unrestricted gifts that are meant to support “the research of world-class permanent faculty members at top universities around the world,” according to Google. These awards allow Google to maintain relationships with academic institutions pursuing innovative research in fields within the company’s interests. More than 950 proposals from 55 countries and 350 universities were submitted this year, 151 of which were funded. The proposals covered topics such as machine learning, speech recognition, natural language processing, computational neuroscience, and privacy.
