Home work & Grading: Term grade is based on lab reports and homework.

Even though you will work in teams, all lab reports have to be submitted individually, by each student.
A guide for the preparation of Lab Reports is provided.

Course Description:

GE U111 is a required 4SH freshman engineering course offered in the winter semester. It introduces the students to basic concepts of programming (using the ubiquitous languages MATLAB and C++) and its use in engineering .

Our section of GE U111 will be offered in an exploratory High-Tech Tools and Toys Laboratory (HTT&TL). The HTT&TL is equiped with computers interfaced with test and measurement equipment to control high-tech instruments such as ultrasound transducers and x-y positioners. It offers students the oportunity to learn basic programming and engineering problem-solving principles through hands on experience with exciting laboratory work, writing programs to control instruments and use them for three dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging.

Specific Tools & Toys:

Acoustic distance sensors

Programmable computer controlled stepper motors

Computer controlled planar pointer / positioner

An underwater ultrasound hidden shape detector

All these tools & toys are simplified demonstrations of commercially available, sophisticated instruments, used in such applications as precision machine tools, chemical process control and medical imaging.

Specific Concepts and Skills:

Gathering and analyzing experimental data and system identification

Quantitative strategies to reduce the effects of measurement uncertainties in experimental results

Basic MATLAB and C++ programming, including the use of loops, logical constructs, and arrays

Concepts of computer control, including I/O ports, open and closed loop control

Simple concepts of digital signal processing, including thresholding and filtering

Written engineering communication, including the preparation of lab reports

Each student should bring a computer diskette to each lab meeting!!!
