From mcdonald@ece.neu.edu Sat Sep 24 23:09:48 2005 Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 12:52:51 -0400 (EDT) From: A. Bruce McDonald To: Yue Fang Subject: Hi and Congrats!! Some important stuff--please read. Hi Yue! You've done great work and its very close now... Just make one last push and it'll be history. Thank you so much for joining my group. You have been its backbone for several years and have met every challenge I posed to you and exceeded all expectations. See the attached file: If you send me your resume---mainly covering your FT jobs (titles, dates, responsibilities), your Internships (name of project, supervisor, company, dates), RA position (Project---if specified, supervisor, contribution, dates), TA positions (Class, responibilities, dates) and also if you put together a "professional service" list (see the bottom of my home page for an out-of-date example of what I mean. You could also add a community and other service list if you want--last, but not least: formal education---for each school attended or degree received or pursued after HS: list the name of the school, it's location, Dept name, Degree (if any), dates attended, Thesis title (if any). I'll put into the format of the attached paper to give you a very professional CV. Be sure to include important accomplishments and contributions in each job or project. I am sorry I had to run off so quickly on Monday. I wish we could have spent some time. Given the small amount of time we were able to work together to knock out the presentation you did an excellent job. More importantly, the material in the Proposal is excellent in concept, results and completeness. Combined with all your publications you are ready to go. Could you let me know your status and plans?? Would you be willing to consider rellocation, perhaps back to Boston, if I can find a more appropriate opportunity for you?? I want to see you using your research and writting skills. We all miss having you around the lab. Finally, can you propose some dates in early December for your defense??? I'd REALLY like to have it done BEFORE year's end. I'll email again with the info I promised... You may have to remind me. On papers---this is mostly my work, but there are a few things I need from you, nothing that falls out of the scope of your final Dissertation... I have three journal submissions in mind for you that I want to begin work on. (1) The Deferral Set Framework: Part One Analysis of Wireless Network MAC Channel Capacity Fang, Y. and McDonald, A.B. (2) The Deferral Set Framework: Part Two Analysis of Wireless Network MAC Capacity Fang, Y. and McDonald, A.B. (3) The Shrinking Rate of Return Problem: Enhancing MAC Efficiency for High Capacity Wireless LANs Fang, Y., Ozmedir, M., McDonald, A.B., Gu, D. and Zhang, J. The first is based on modification of the draft we already have. I have some additional material I am working on to add. The second is based largely on the Chapter from the Proposal and the MWCN paper as well as some addition material. The only things I need from you are full access to the directories where the files reside and also a comparative review of the "Contention Graph" paper---and any follow up material, and more of the Gupta Kumar results and Grosslauser results and related material. Finally, in the case of the network problem--any new results you can find as well as any other IDEAs you have to complete the problem... I may integrate DCR into that paper as an application (what do you think?). The other option is to wait for Jerry to produce results that extend DCR and make a separate Journal submission. We could do both by incorporating only the design framework for basic DCR---as it relates to the overall framework and have a second more in-depth paper when Jerry completes the first set of enhancements---including the traffic profile into the code... This could be presented as a grid network or fixed sensor network methodology. With enough added meat I think there is a second paper even if I include results from the first in the Framework paper (thoughts?). Finally, based on the MERL work you and Mustafa completed I think it can be combined into a single journal paper. We may want to produce a few more (new) results... I can work on analytical aspects and I turn to you and Mustafa for simulation... Perhaps you can correspond with Mustafa and decide on what sensitivity analysis is needed---and perhaps the possibility of combining methods and getting simulation results. We would then enlist Jerry to complete the actual simulations and statistical analyses---you guys give me an outline of the experimental design and Jerry provides the simulation results. If so, we can add his name to the end of the authors list if his contribution is large enough. I don't want to run this by Daqing until I have a draft. I am sure he will be happy. BTW: I am pushing him on two fronts---(1) Hire you FT (find the budget) and (2) support one of my other students as an RA and summer intern. The intern is set; for the RA he needs to convince those above him. Given the quality and quantity of work produced by yourself and Mustafa I think there is a possibility. IMPORTATANT: ************************* ***What I need from you (Yue) is directories with all the final material, tex files, inputs, etc., for the two MERL papers. Also, could you immediately email the final PDFs of both papers??? ************************* Those are three papers that I see no reason why I cannot work on them NOW and submit them before the end of the year. The DCR paper(s) beyond including some results in the 2nd paper need to wait for Jerry. I see three papers--basically Jerry is inhering this work for now: (1) Enhanced DCR: Lee, J., McDonald, A.B. and Fang, Y. (2) Stability and Dynamic Analysis of DCR: Lee, J., McDonald, A.B. and Fang, Y. (3) Distributed and Optimized DCR Lee, J., McDonald, A.B. and Fang, Y. *(4) On the Implementation of DCR Lee, J., McDonald, A.B. and Fang, Y. *assuming we can build a testbed.... or perhaps emulator OK--so I think that is all for now. The only thing is that I may have instances where I need to confer directly with you to understand something or to run an idea past you. What are the best days/times to call? When you come in for your defense please try to include extra time before and after... Before I *really* want to ensure that we sit down and not only work on slides, but have you practice the presentation multiple times before me and the group. I want you to be totally confident without anxiety (except for normal level)... The more you practice in front of people you trust the better will be your oral defense. I don't want them to be able to poke too many holes in it and I want you SOUNDING like THE EXPERT. [ Part 2, "Publications CV" Application/PDF 97KB. ] [ Unable to print this part. ]
