From mcdonald@ece.neu.edu Sat Sep 24 23:10:02 2005 Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 13:32:24 -0400 (EDT) From: A. Bruce McDonald To: Mustafa Ozdemir Subject: Next Steps... Hi Mustafa, I am planning to submit the following two journal papers in the near future. Please let me know of anything that you feel needs to be added, modified, etc... I am going to do the BULK of the paper construction based on the material we already have... A few things are needed from you that will move you towards your Ph.D. anyway. (1) The Shrinking Rate of Return Problem: Enhancing MAC Efficiency for High Capacity Wireless LANs Fang, Y., Ozmedir, M., McDonald, A.B., Gu, D. and Zhang, J. Combines the work done by yourself and Yue at MERL. In addition to pasting it all together I think there is a need for some analysis (I'll take on that, and possibly some further simulation analysis with differnt factors. It may also prove useful to combine two or more mechanisms and do simulation. I don't want you to have to do anything on this.... I do want you to contact Yue and discuss such a paper and what additional simulation and possible combined mechanisms need to be considered. You guys will specify what needs to be done--by experimental design and Jerry will be the man to implement, run and do statistical analysis---with you as the goto guy for help. (2) On the Design and Analysis of an 802.11 DCF Compatible QoS MAC Protocol for Wireless LANs: AROMA Ozdemir, M., McDonald, A.B. and Ramanathan, R. Here--my main objective is to really highlight the main points that I believe were missed by reviewers of previous versions (MCR). I do need some additional assistance from you on the work. This is all material you will need for the proposal (or dissertation) anyway. I. I think I need you to write a subsection that details the admission controller. It doesn't seem clear to me how your queing model can or are integrated into AROMA. II. We need a discussion of the multiple-hop/distributed admission controller. III. Is there additional simulation that we can do to examine a broader range of scenarios, traffic patterns, etc.? Come up with an experimental design and we'll task Jerry with completing the actual simulations and doing the statistical analysis of the results. Please comment on these three issues... Also list the main concerns expressed by the MCR reviewers so I can try to address them. Please make available to me the directory with all the files for the MCR submission. Finally, the last paper may not be ready to put together yet: (3) On the Performance of Multiple-Hop Wireless Networks: An Ergodic Queing Analysis Ozdemir, M. and McDonald, A.B. Please give me a status update on how the MWCN'05 Paper can be extended to a journal paper. This is one area that you need to focus on in your proposal as more broadly applied analysis will be required in you final oral dissertation defense. Please get back to me asap... I need to figure out what papers are feasible for me to complete before the end of the year. Also see the attached list of your publications... Very impressive... I also attach Yue's. I'll talk to you later about what I need to convert this into a complete CV. You can call me home over the weekend if you want to talk about this, also to plan a meeting time for next week. --Bruce -------------------------------------------------------- A.
