Professor Harris holds the William Lincoln Smith Chair in Northeastern University's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He was appointed to this position in 2003. Prior to joining NU, he was the Head of the the Materials Physics Branch at the Naval Research Laboratory. As Branch Head his responsibilities included the technical oversight of over 40 scientists and the management of over 9M$/yr of funding. Professor Harris is now the Director of the Magnetic Materials Laboratory at NU.

Professor Harris maintains an active research program as principal investigator, while providing direct oversight and technical leadership to several students. His research interests include materials design and the study of processing, structure and magnetism in a wide range of materials. He has published over 150 technical articles in peer-reviewed journals, including book chapters and review articles on topical areas of magnetism and magnetic materials. In addition, he holds 5 patents, and has presented more than 150 papers at national and international meetings. His research has been the subject of national press releases from the NRL and the Brookhaven National Laboratory; technology transfer 'spot-light items' at the National Synchrotron Light Source, and numerous awards for technical performance from the NRL.

In 2001, he established and assumed the position of Executive Director of the NRL Synchrotron Radiation Consortium. The NRL-SRC administers five National Synchrotron Light Source beamlines maintaining x-ray absorption and x-ray scattering facilities for use by a wide range of researchers from universities, national laboratories and other government agencies. He relinquished this position when he came to NU. Dr. Bruce Ravel is now the Director of the NRL-SRC. (http://www.x-11.bnl.gov/x11contacts.html)

Professor Harris received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Interdisciplinary  in 1990, and the M.Sc. and B.Sc degrees in Mechanical Engineering all from Northeastern University. Prior to studying at NU, he attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He also received the M.Sc. in Engineering Management from University of Maryland (1995), and the M.Sc. in Executive Technology Management from University of Pennsylvania (jointly administered by the Wharton School of Business and the Townes School of Engineering) in 2003.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and a member of the Materials Research Society, and the IEEE.
