Thermoelectric Effects in Phase-change Memory Devices

Prof. Helena Silva

Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Connecticut

Host: Prof. Nian Sun

Abstract: Phase-change memory (PCM) is a promising technology with the potential to replace flash memory, and possibly DRAM, for faster, non-volatile semiconductor memory. These devices operate under very large temperature gradients, ~ 10-100 K/nm, and strong thermoelectric effects, as well as non-local or ballistic thermal transport are expected. Understanding these mechanisms is critical for optimum device design, operation and reliability. In this talk I will discuss some of these effects and present our experimental and simulation results in phase-change memory devices and also in silicon structures that we are using for transport studies.

Short Bio: Helena Silva is an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Connecticut. She received her B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell University. Prior to joining University of Connecticut in 2006 she was a research staff member at the Xerox Research Center in Webster, NY. Her research interests are in the area of devices physics and technology. Her research is currently supported by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.
