PhD Programs

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and offers two doctoral degrees: a Doctoral Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Doctoral Degree in Computer Engineering. The College of Computer and Information Science offers a Doctoral Degree in Information Assurance.

Doctoral Degree Program in Electrical Engineering

A program of study is determined by the candidate and the Dissertation Committee. A typical program consists of 24 semester hours of course work beyond the Master of Science degree. The PhD program, however, must consist of at least 16 semester hours of course work. The exact nature of the program of study will vary among candidates depending on the dissertation subject area and the candidate's preparation. The program will include one minor area of study consisting of at least 8 semester hours of course work beyond the Master of Science degree in an area other than that in which the candidate is concentrating. The minor may be in another discipline within electrical and computer engineering or the minor area may be in another relevant technical or scientific discipline. The candidate must achieve an overall minimum 3.000 QPA and a 3.000 QPA in the minor area.

Doctoral Degree Program in Computer Engineering

A program of study is determined by the candidate and the Dissertation Adviser. A typical program consists of 24 semester hours of course work beyond the Master of Science degree. The PhD program, however, must contain at least 16 semester hours of course work. The exact nature of the program will vary among candidates depending on the dissertation subject area and the candidate's preparation. The program will include a minimum of 8 semester hours of course work beyond the Master of Science degree in non-Computer Engineering courses. The candidate must achieve an overall minimum 3.000 QPA and a 3.000 QPA in the non-Computer Engineering area.

Doctoral Degree Program in Information Assurance

The PhD in Information Assurance program is designed for both students with a strong background in a technical field and those with non-technical backgrounds and a strong desire to pursue interdisciplinary work in areas related to information assurance. Applicants are expected to have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA.

Students who do not have the necessary technical background may be required to take courses such as Fundamentals of Information Assurance, Network and Systems and Fundamentals of Computer Engineering to prepare for the program. Click here for more information
