COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
LABORATORY SAFETY POLICY
NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
INTRODUCTION

College of Engineering (COE) policy allows undergraduate students access to university laboratory and shop facilities with supervision after agreement to comply with various safety regulations. Every effort is made to make these areas as safe as possible, but your conduct in them plays a significant role in whether you will remain safe while working there.  The attached policy provides regulations and guidelines that ensure safe behavior and practices. You are expected to read the guidelines and comply with them at all times in the labs.  After reading, understanding, and agreeing to abide by the provisions of the policy, please sign this form in the indicated space (third page) and return one copy to your instructor.  Unless this sheet is signed and returned, you will not be permitted to use laboratory or shop areas.  The College pledges to provide a safe and meaningful laboratory experience, and wishes you the best in your work.

GENERAL POLICY

1.  Identify the location of exits and telephone when you first enter the laboratory.  Emergency phone numbers are clearly listed by each phone in the laboratory.  The University Public Safety Emergency number is x3333.

2.  You are required to wear eye protection in all laboratories at all times.  Ask your instructor, TA or lab technician to show you where eye protection is located in any lab or shop in which you are working.

3. Faculty, technicians and TAs have the authority and responsibility to refuse the use of a facility to any student who does not follow safe operating procedures or does not know how to use equipment and refuses to accept instruction.   The technician or TA will report these problems to the faculty member responsible.

4.  Use common sense.  If an unsafe condition exists - leave the area and notify the responsible person.  If you feel uncomfortable using a piece of equipment, ask the instructor, TA or technician for assistance.  Report any unsafe conditions to the technician in the area.  If you do not get an immediate response, report these conditions to one of the following individuals:

 Laboratories Director - Jeff Doughty   (617) 373-3457
MIME Safety Officer – Prof. Greg Kowalski  (617) 373-2971
MIME Chairman - John Cipolla    (617) 373-3805

5.  Improper behavior in the laboratory or shop areas will not be tolerated.  These areas require your full attention when you use them and are not social gathering areas.  Rough play, inappropriate use of equipment or materials, or being in areas of the lab that are off limits are all grounds for being asked to leave the facility.

6.  No food or beverage is allowed in any laboratory or shop.

7.  In case of an accident, follow the CHECK, CALL CARE procedure. First CHECK the area to make sure it is safe, then check the victim to see what is wrong.  CALL for help immediately (for Emergencies dial x3333); calling for help can be more important than assisting the victim.  You need to get trained help on the scene as quickly as possible.  CARE for the victim if you are able.  After help has been called, notify the technician.  Once the situation is under control the following people should be contacted:

Jeff Doughty   335 SN 373-3457
Professor Greg Kowalski 205 SN 373-2971
Professor John Cipolla 331 SN 373-3805

It is important that a full-time staff member be informed of the accident as soon as possible.

Keep this list of rules and contact numbers for your records, and return the following page with signature stating that you have read the rules and information above.

Remember:
for Emergencies Dial 3333 from on-campus phones

I have read the Laboratory Safety Policy of the College of Engineering at Northeastern University, and agree to abide by these regulations.
