Packing List
Here's a very incomplete packing list. We'll add to it as we
think of things. If you have questions, ask, and we'll discuss.
- It will be early winter in Santiago, but the climate is more
moderate than in the US. Some nights will be a little below
freezing (to -3C) and days may be warm enough to go out with light
clothing. Bring reasonably warm clothing, but don't prepare for a
Boston winter. Also, you'll want to get around the city so bring
comfortable walking shoes.
- Bring a couple of warm sweaters and maybe sweatshirts and
sweatpants. Homes are usually kept cooler than in the US.
- Bring one nice outfit (not coat and tie, but nice enough for
meetings with industry people if the opportunity arises).
- Expect some rain days during our stay. You may want to buy an
umbrella when you arrive in Santiago.
- Pack enough prescription medications to last a week longer than
you think you need, just in case. Carry these in
your carry-on bag. Do not check them. Bring a copy of the
prescription to show at customs to convince them that your
medications are not illegal.
- Don't forget your passport. Have it in your
pocket or carry-on bag. You will need it several times at the
airport.
- Bring your laptop. Make sure you have access to Matlab for the
course. You'll also want your laptop to stay in touch with family and
friends back home.
- Bring a couple of power adaptors and/or chargers with European
plugs. You'll want to charge your electronics and you don't want to
be running around looking for adaptors.
- You can buy toothpaste, OTC medicines and such, but they may be
different brands than you know. If you are fussy, bring enough to
last.
- Ski areas that are day trips from Santiago may open in early to
mid-June. You can rent equipment, but you may want to bring a
suitable ski jacket if you are interested. You'll probably want
that warm jacket on the Sewell trip too.
