Announcements (Updated 13 June 2018)

(Wednesday 13 June 2018) This is just for the 15 NU students traveling back to Atlanta Saturday night.

(1) I have reserved two large vans to take us from the hotel to the airport Saturday. Please be at the hotel lobby before 4:45pm. We will begin to load the vans for a departure before 5:00pm. We cannot leave the country without everyone, so please do not deviate from this plan, as you will interrupt the travel plans of others.

(2) When you entered Chile, you received a document that looks like a cash register tape. Remember to bring that with your passport so you can exit the country. Your passport will receive an exit stamp.

(3) You can check your luggage to your final destination, even if that is not Boston. We will go through customs in Atlanta. You will pick up your bags and take them through customs, after which you will put them back into the system for transfer to your flight to your final destination.

(Wednesday 6 June 2018) Homework 4 is posted above. You may find the functions fftaxis.m and fftaxisshift.m useful. These are also posted below.

(Thursday 31 May 2018) There is a file called hsi4.m posted in the supplementary material that you my find useful for 3D plotting. I'll show how to use it in one of the workshops. It is not very robust but it is often useful.

(TUesday 29 May 2018) Homework 3 is posted.

(Monday, 28 May 2018) NU students please note that Felipe will assist you in recharging your BIP cards. The DOC program will recharge the card for your travel between your host home and the campus for classes. You may add extra funds to your card for extra travel. Note that you can do so at the snack bar at the Science building, next to el Reloj. It can be faster there than at the Metro stations sometimes.

All students: We are approaching the middle of the term. If you have comments about the course, or other parts of the program, please send an email. We are planning next year's program so we'd appreciate suggestions for that too.

Tuesday, Martes, 22 Mayo 2018) HW2 is now posted above. Please remember that the Chilean Literature course is cancelled tomorrow. We will make it up at a later time, and there will be a substitute activity planned.

(Wednesday, Miercoles, 16 Mayo 2018) I've added the agenda that Camilia sent us to the top of this page so you can find it quickly. I've also updated my home page on NU's ECE department site so that the link for this course comes to this page. If you forget the course link, search for DiMarzio Northeastern and find my homepage. Then click on the Biomedical Imaging link and you'll come here.

(Tuesday, Martes 15 May 2018) Up near the top of the page, I've started a Homework section. We've reviewed your survey responses and put together groups that provide each group with a diversity of Matlab skills, a diversity of mathematical skills, and representation of both universities. Please read Eric's homework policies and take a look at Homework HW1.

(14 May 2018) Tuesday morning, the Biomedical Imaging course is frm 9:00 to 11:30 in Biblioteca Auditorio B. The NU students have Spanish from 11:30 to 13:00.

(14 May 2018) The first meeting is today at 11:00 in R-03 (el Reloj building). We will meet in the entry of el Reloj and walk to the classroom at 11:00.

(13 May 2018) Hola! Welcome to our ten UAndes students who will be joining the class in Biomedical Imaging this year. All students please complete the survey that was mailed to you over the weekend. You can bring it to class Tuesday or email it to me as a .pdf file. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email.

(8 May 2018) Here are a few updates as we get close to our departure.
Flights: There have been some minor changes in the flights. The following apply to all of us going down and to those who are returning with the group. You should have received email from Maria Brewer with the flight manifest. Check that your name is spelled correctly. If you are not returning with the group, check that your flight information is correct.

Fri 11 May 2018
DL2626 BOS --- ATL
4:00p --- 6:47p
DL147 ATL --- SCL
10:29p --- 9:00a (Sat)

Sat 16 Jun 2018
DL146 SCL --- ATL
7:40p --- 5:31a (Sun)
DL104 ATL --- BOS
7:35a --- 10:09a

Baggage: Maria tells me that we get 1 piece of free checked baggage not to exceed 23kgs/50lbs. And one carryon on: UP TO 45 LINEAR INCHES/115 LINEAR CENTIMETERS. Some of you who are not returning with the group have different types of tickets and may be allowed 2 checked bags. Check with the airline to be sure. However, my advice is to pack light and leave some space in your bags; you'll probably return with more than you take because you'll buy gifts for friends and family and you'll probably pick up a few things for yourself.

Travel Plans: Plan to arrive at the airport around 2pm on Friday. Don't forget your passport. Check in and check your bag, and come to the gate. Eric and I will be there.

We should have time for a snack or dinner at ATL. We'll go to the concourse where our SCL flight departs and find a place to eat.

Our arrival at SCL will probably be chaotic. In Boston I'll give you a 3X5 card. Please write your name on it. When we get out of customs at SCL, you'll probably see your name on a sign held by your host family. Eric and I will walk straight out of the customs area to the far wall. When you have your ride, find one of us and leave your name card. We will not leave the airport until we know you all have rides.

Sunday: On Sunday afternoon, we'll do a short tour of the city by Metro (Your family should have your BIP card, and if not, you can buy one and put a small amount of money on it at any Metro station) and on foot, and we'll have a welcome lunch somewhere. Let's gather in the lobby of the Hotel Ibis at 1:00PM. Remember the time changes back to Chile Standard Time Saturday night, so we will be on GMT-4, which is the same as Boston's Daylight time. If your family has special plans, just let me know, and go with them instead. The Ibis address is O'Connell 165, but the easiest way to get there from Manquehue station is to walk north on Ave. Manquehue from Apoquindo. You'll see stairs down to a brick area below ground level, and the Ibis main entrance is at the back of that area.

Emergencies: Text my US mobile number in case of emergency. I believe I can simply recharge my Chilean phone which is 956732051. However, that will not happen until Saturday afternoon. I'll email you when I've done it.

I will dry-run an "emergency test" sometime Sunday evening to make sure all our numbers are working. When I do, just reply with your name.

Culture Course: As reminder, the culture couse will be different from those in the past. It counts for SI or IC under NUPath.

Please email if you have any questions and look for updates here. I look forward to seeing you all on Friday.

(7 April 2018) Here are the Notes from pre-departure meeting . If you did not attend, please read carefully. There is also a Packing List. These are linked at the bottom of this main page as well. Remember to send a picture of your passport page with your picture on it. Now GEO wants these as well and has set a date of 15 April, so please send them soon.

(13 Mar 2018) Here are the Notes from pre-departure meeting . If you did not attend, please read carefully. There are items that need to be completed. Note that I'm currently working on getting NU-Path certification for the culture course.

(11 Jan 2018) Visas are not required for anyone on this trip. You are advised to make sure your passport is valid for 6 months or more after the end of the trip (eg. December 2018).

(18 Dec 2017) Here is what the travel agent gave us for flights. I expect that some of the times are off by about an hour because they were taken from the current schedule with Boston on Standard time and Santiago on Summer time.

ABOUT THE BACKGROUND: My favorite winter passtime is skiing. I put this background together from a detail of a photograph taken at Park City, in 2003. There are four copies in different orientations so that the tracks (and more importantly, the brightness levels) line up as the pattern repeats.
