This talk will present first a historical view on the development of ad hoc networks, with some examples taken from routing protocols. There are three communities in the field, dominated by engineers, computer scientists, and mathematician, respectively. This talk will present some observations about the approaches taken by each community and their differences. There is a need for more emphasizes on design of localized protocols, based on more realistic assumptions. Ad hoc and sensor networks are experiencing exponential growth since 1996. Further overall trends will be discussed. Several specific problem areas in ad hoc and sensor networks where speaker expects growing activity in coming years will be listed.
