Prof. Elias S. Manolakos was born in Patras, Greece. He obtained the PhD degree in Computer Eng. from University of Southern California, the MSEE degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the Diploma in Electrical Eng. from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Before joining Northeastern University (1989) he has been  a Research Associate with Princeton University and Assistant Professor at SUNY Stony Brook. Elias has received the NSF Research Initiation Award  (1993) and the Panhellenic Award in Informatics from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation(IKY) after ranking first in nationwide examinations (1984).

Prof. Elias Manolakos research interests are  in:

  • High Performance Signal Processing Systems (algorithms, architectures, design automation)
  • Ambient Intelligence Systems (sensor networks, embedded systems, pervasive computing)
  • Machine Learning  (with applications to computational biology, ecological modeling etc)

His research at NU has been supported over the years by research grants from the NSF , DARPA,  DOE ,  EPA and by a number of R@D companies in the greater Boston area. At NU he has advised to completion 8 PhD and 15 MSc students (with thesis option).

 

He has introduced to the curriculum and taught courses in Signal Processing and Computer Engineering at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Elias is a Senior Member of IEEE (1995) and an elected member of the IEEE International Technical Committee on the  Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems and a member of the Advisory Board of the IEEE International Technical  committee on  Machine Learning for Signal Processing .

He has served as the Program Chair of International conferences such as the IEEE Neural Networks for Signal Processing (NNSP-95) and the IEEE Signal Processing Systems, Design and Implementation (SiPS98).  He has also organized or chaired several conference special  sessions.

Prof. Manolakos currently serves in the Editorial Board of: the Computing in Science and Engineering , the  IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing,   and  the Journal and of  Signal Processing Systems, Springer Verlag Publ.

Elias has co-edited three IEEE Press books and co-authored with his students more than 80 publications in refereed Journals and Conference Proceedings.
